**Important: Personal licence application process

Testimonials

“The training was manageable alongside other commitments, with around 6 hours of e-learning that could be done at once or all in one, whatever your preference. The learning was quite entertaining and covered all of the content of the exam. The exam was done remotely but in very strict exam conditions with a remote invigilator who checked the candidate’s identity, surroundings and workspace to ensure that the exam was done in controlled conditions and by the correct person. This was very reassuring as it maintains the integrity of the qualification.” – David Clarke, Durham Police

“Very enjoyable, relaxed course with a calm and helpful delivery.” – Terry Alken, Dover Court

“Very interesting with good examples and case studies.” – Hannah McCuly, Licensing Officer

“Instructor was very knowledgeable and made the course interesting” – Chris George, Business Fire Safety Officer, Avon Fire and Rescue Service

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • Who is the Personal Licence course for?

If you are planning on working in a bar, restaurant, club or any other licensed premises that sells alcohol, a personal licence is absolutely vital. This is because, the licence allows you to authorise the sale of alcohol in any business that holds a premises licence.

Additionally, the other types of business that need a premises licence include:

    • Takeaways
    • Nightclubs
    • Cinemas
    • Pubs and bars
    • Supermarkets
    • Theatres

By law, every licensed premises must have at least one personal licence holder. The penalties for selling alcohol without one are serious; an unlimited fine and/or a maximum prison sentence of 6 months.

  • What do I need for my Personal Licence to be granted?

    To grant your licence, you:

    • must be over 18 years old
    • must possess an accredited licensing qualification
    • must not have had a personal licence forfeited in the last five years
    • must be have the right to work in the United Kingdom
    • must pay the appropriate fee and compete an application form
    • must supply two passport style photographs, signed by a solicitor or anyone else with standing in the community
    • must not have a conviction for any “relevant” offence or foreign offences

  • How long is the Personal Licence valid for?

Unlike a driving licence, a personal licence has no expiry date. Therefore the licence remains valid indefinitely from the date of issue and is also nationally recognised throughout England and Wales.

As a result, this is a one payment solution that will benefit a personal licence holder financially in the longer terms and requires no further financial investment.

However, authorities can remove the licence from the licence holder if the licence is surrendered or forfeited. Additionally, a court can also order the licence to be forfeited or suspended.

  • What is the BIIAB?

The British Institute of Innkeeping Award Body established itself over 40 years ago and today supports, inspires, celebrates and promotes the diversity of talented individuals working in the licensed trade.

Correspondingly, the BIIAB offer regulated qualifications and assessments to advance skills, education and career opportunities.
