What is a personal alcohol licence?

If you are planning on working in a bar, restaurant, club or any other licensed premises that sells alcohol, a personal licence is absolutely vital.

This is because a personal licence allows you to authorise the sale of alcohol in any business that holds a premises licence. Or put another way, it means that you can sell alcohol and you can authorise others working with you to also sell alcohol.

By law, every licensed premises must have at least one personal licence holder.

The penalties for selling alcohol without one are serious: an unlimited fine and/or a maximum prison sentence of 6 months.

How to apply for a personal licence

You will be pleased to hear that obtaining a personal licence is simple. All you need to do is pass the BIIAB Level 2 Award for Personal Licence Holders (APLH) exam, a qualification administered by the British Institute of Innkeeping.

After you pass, you can then apply to your local authority to obtain your personal licence.

Over the last 25 years we have helped literally 1000s of people pass their tests and apply for their personal licences. We can train individuals as well as groups. Plus, our trainers work on a national basis, so we will probably have a test centre near you.

How to pass your APLH exam

Obviously we cannot tell you exactly how to pass your exam, but we can tell you what score you need and what topics to look out for.

You will have to answer 40 multiple choice questions. And you will need to get at least 28 correct to pass.

The APLH exam will contain a wide range of questions. And you are likely to face topics such as the:

  • sale of alcohol to children
  • consumption of alcohol by children
  • number of days police and environmental health have to object to a temporary event notice
  • colour of the paper used on various notices for display
  • bodies which can apply for a review of a premises licence
