Institute of Licensing’s 25th annual National Training Conference

This event features over 70 speakers, with presentations from licensing solicitors Nick Arron, Jonathan Smith and Andy Grimsey

As a leading firm of alcohol and gambling licensing solicitors, we are heavily involved in the trade and work with its various bodies and organisations.

So, we are proud to be involved with the Institute of Licensing’s 25th annual National Training Conference, taking place 17 – 19th of November 2021.

The Institute plays an important role in the sector and is concerned with education in the field of licensing and regulatory activity. It is governed by a voluntary Board of Trustees, each leaders in their own field, drawn from across the field of public and private sectors, police, academia and the law.

This event sees over 70 speakers giving short, sharp presentations which are full of valuable learning takeaways. Guest talks are from licensing solicitors, barristers, trade body professionals, licensing authority professionals, police and operators. This includes the British Institute of Inkeeping, UKHospitality, Rockport leisure and Tesco.

Alcohol licensing issues

Alcohol licensing solicitors Jonathan Smith and Andy Grimsey presented a deck entitled “Licensable activities and where to find them.”

This legal overview covered items such as:

Gambling Regulation

Gambling licensing solicitor Nick Arron along with Adam Hodges, from leading adult gaming centre operator, Game Nation, gave a talk on gambling regulation from an operator’s perspective.

Special licensing award

The event also sees the winner of the Jeremy Allen Award revealed.

This award is a tribute to the life and professional career of Jeremy Allen, licensing solicitor and founding partner of Poppleston Allen, whose dedication to partnership working and best practice in licensing made him one of the most respected and popular figures in the industry. Jeremy sadly passed away shortly after becoming Chair of the Institute of Licensing.

This prestigious award is open to anyone working in licensing and related fields and seeks to recognise and award exceptional practitioners. Crucially, entry to the award is by third party nomination, which in itself is a tribute to the nominee in that they have been put forward by colleagues in recognition and out of respect to their professionalism and achievements.
