Government extension to licensing hours continues as Lionesses progress to the UEFA Championship 2025 final

In England and Wales licensing hours will be extended by 2 hours for those premises licensed to sell alcohol until 11pm

In a dramatic semi-final match at Stade de Genève in Switzerland, England came from behind to defeat Italy 2-1, setting up a showdown against either Germany or Spain in the UEFA Women’s European Championship 2025 final on Sunday, 27th July.

As a result of England reaching the final, many licensed premises will be able to stay open later to celebrate. This is because the Government previously announced that licensing hours would be extended by 2 hours should England or Wales reach the semi-finals or final of the tournament. This extension follows on from previous successful national extensions for ‘significant events’, such as VE Day and the Men’s Euros in 2024.

So, when England Women step onto the pitch this Sunday, venues that are normally licensed to sell alcohol until 11pm (whether under a premises licence or club premises certificate) will be allowed to remain open and sell alcohol until 1am. Premises not licensed to sell alcohol until 11pm on Sunday 27th July do not benefit from this extension, which also does not apply to alcohol to be sold off the premises, regulated entertainment or late night refreshment.

Earlier this week, solicitor Alex Tomlinson appeared on The Morning Advertiser website alongside Emma McClarkin OBE FIH, Kate Nicholls OBE, and Michael Kill to discuss how extended hours can boost community spirit and local business.
