Leading licensing law firm Poppleston Allen has reported an unprecedented increase in applications from takeaway operators seeking late-night licences ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, as businesses look to capitalise on an expected boom in demand during televised matches.
With England and Scotland fixtures potentially taking place across cities including Boston, New York, Vancouver, Miami and Kansas, many matches are expected to run beyond the hours currently permitted on many licences. At the same time, many pubs across the country have extended their opening hours to accommodate supporters watching late-night fixtures, creating a significant opportunity for takeaway operators to serve supporters leaving venues looking for on-the-go food options along with those at home ordering it for delivery.
Poppleston Allen says hundreds of takeaways have recognised the commercial potential presented by the tournament.
Graeme Cushion, Managing Partner at Poppleston Allen, said:
“We have seen a significant rise in enquiries from takeaway operators looking to extend their trading hours for the World Cup. Many QSR businesses are aware that there could be substantial demand well into the night, but operators need to be prepared if they want to capitalise.”
Poppleston Allen is advising operators to review their existing permissions and engage with local licensing authorities as soon as possible. The firm warns that relying on last minute applications can create unnecessary risk, particularly where objections may arise.
The increase in applications reflects growing confidence within the hospitality sector that the 2026 World Cup could deliver one of the biggest trading opportunities in recent years for licensed premises and late-night food operators alike.
