2024 Jeremy Allen Award for Excellence in Licensing winner announced

Naz Pathan, Senior Licensing Officer in Solihull Council walks away as 2024 award winner

On Wednesday 13th November, the Institute of Licensing (IoL) and Poppleston Allen Licensing Solicitors announced Naz Pathan of Solihull Council as the 2024 winner of the annual Jeremy Allen Award for Excellence in Licensing.

Presented at the IoL’s National Training Conference, the award annually recognises an individual who demonstrates excellence in the licensing trade and simultaneously made a notable difference by consistently going the extra mile.

Since 1998, Naz Pathan has been an active member of the Solihull licensing team, showing enormous commitment, dedication and enthusiasm for the world of licensing.

To highlight his reputation in the industry a sample quote from the nomination forms says: “He has a strong reputation for being extremely knowledgeable and a real ‘go-to’ person not only regionally but further afield too.”

With over 20 years in the trade, Naz has been involved in several important initiatives. These include, setting up and chairing both the Regional Taxi Licensing Forum (RTLF), working closely with NALEO to drive a safeguarding agenda both in the NTE and taxi licensing. Naz is also the SPOC for the Common Law disclosure unit at West Midlands Police.

Naz created, coordinated and led Multi-Agency Vehicle Exercises (MAVEs) in Solihull and the wider region to promote road safety, disrupt criminality on the road network, and achieve compliance across all agencies.

About the award

The Jeremy Allen Award was established in 2011 as an ongoing tribute to Jeremy Allen, solicitor and founding member of licensing solicitors Poppleston Allen. The award to anyone working in licensing and related fields and seeks to recognise exceptional practitioners.

Crucially, this award is by 3rd party nomination, which in itself is a tribute to everyone nominated in that they have been put forward by colleagues in recognition and out of respect to their professionalism and achievements.

Paula Kioko joined Poppleston Allen in June 2022 as the marketing assistant for her sandwich year placement.

In January 2024 she became the marketing associate.

She completed her BA in Journalism in 2021 and her MSc in Advertising and Marketing Communications in 2023, both at Nottingham Trent University.

Paula moved to the UK as an international student in 2018 from Nairobi, Kenya in order to enhance her academic and professional development.

Her day to day work currently revolves around the management of the website and social media platforms.

Paula works under the direction of the head of marketing to help reach the firm’s marketing goals and objectives.

In addition, Paula is also working towards her level 4 accreditation from the Chartered Institute of Marketing.

She also holds the BIIAB Level 2 Award for Personal Licence Holders (APLH).
