James Anderson - Partner
James joined Poppleston Allen as a solicitor in September 2003 and was made a partner in April 2006.He has many years experience in licensing law, acting for a wide range of clients, based mainly in London, from individuals to major operators. In the 2008 Chambers Guide, James is described as a "standout lawyer" for his work.
James won a landmark case in June 2007 for a London bar in a West End stress area, and was granted extended trading hours by Westminster City Council. It was one of the first bars or pubs in the area to be granted an extension outside core hours. He was then granted further extended hours in an Appeal against the Council in December 2007.
A pioneer in many areas of his work, James has championed outside drinking for a couple of pubs along the Thames despite residents’ objections and was famously reported as ‘slamming the government’ by a trade newspaper in 2006 for a lack of guidelines on the smoking ban.
When he isn’t fighting for the common man’s right to smoke and drink when and where he wants to, he also works on new licences for a medium sized independent chain of off-licences in London so he can smoke and drink at home too!
James also heads up the Poppleston Allen Betting and Gaming team, assisting many operators through the 2007 reform process; from betting shops and bingo halls to arcade operators. James has also developed a training DVD in this area for the Law Society in conjunction with the Gambling Commission.
James is involved in a significant number of lectures and training sessions for licensees, councils and other responsible authorities around the country for entertainment, liquor, betting and gaming.
