Clare joined the firm as a Partner having gained a formidable reputation at McLellans Solicitors in Hertfordshire from 1997 – 2004 with clients such as JD Wetherspoon, Barracuda and McMullen & Sons together with a range of independent operators in London and earned herself a listing in the Chambers Legal Directory for a number of years.

She moved in house in 2004 for two years as Legal Director for JD Wetherspoon managing a team of twelve people in one of the most high profile managed pub chains in the UK, renowned for its ground breaking property portfolio on the high street. Clare was involved primarily in licensing, planning and property acquisitions. She was also responsible for advising the business and ensuring the smooth transition of the new liquor licensing regime across the estate of over 600 premises during 2005.

Given her experience in-house, Clare brings a valuable commercial and strategic awareness of the firm and has developed a strong presence in London for Poppleston Allen with her specialist knowledge and contacts. Clare works for a number of national pub operators, including Bay Restaurant Group Limited, Town & City Pub Company Limited, The Orchid Group, Shepherd Neame and McMullen & Sons Limited. In addition, Clare acts for a number of London restaurateurs, such as Caprice Holdings and other London operators including Balls Brothers Limited.

Clare advises clients in relation to all licensing and related enforcement matters but also works closely with Poppleston Allen’s planning consultant to maximise opportunities for external trading areas and also to lift planning restrictions, such as opening hours or restrictive operating conditions. In addition, Clare is an experienced advocate, regularly representing clients in contested licensing review hearings.

Clare is the Secretary of the London Region of the Institute of Licensing and speaks regularly at industry conferences and events and regularly hosts seminars for the clients’ firms. In addition, Clare regularly comments in the trade and national press.
