Clare Eames - Partner
Clare joined the firm as a Partner in 2007 to head up the licensing team in the London Office and she has in depth knowledge and experience in dealing with the London Boroughs and the difficulties that are often encountered, for example in obtaining new licences or extension of hours in stress areas such as in Westminster, Camden and Hackney.Prior to joining the firm Clare had gained a formidable reputation, beginning her career at McLellans Solicitors in Hertfordshire between 1997 and 2004 and thereafter as Legal Director for JD Wetherspoons until 2006, where Clare managed the legal team in one of the most high profile managed pub chains in the UK. Clare was involved primarily in licensing, planning and property acquisitions and her key task during the two years was responsibility for advising the business and ensuring the smooth transition of the new licensing regime across the Estate of over 600 premises during 2005.
With her experience working in house, Clare also brings a valuable commercial and strategic awareness to the firm and has developed a strong presence in London for Poppleston Allen with her specialist knowledge and contacts.
Clare acts for national pub operators, including Stonegate Pub Company Limited, and also advises and acts for Shepherd Neame, Orchid, McMullen & Sons Limited and a variety of London operators including Caprice Holdings Ltd and All Star Lanes. Clare also has a number of nightclub clients both in and around the London area.
Clare is described within the 2012 Chambers & Partners Directory as “very clued up and understands the industry” and noted as being “able to see not just the law but how it will affect operations on a practical level”. The Legal 500 praises Clare for being ‘efficient’ and ‘knowledgeable’ and is recognised as a ‘source of sound advice’
Clare advises her key clients in relation to all licensing and related enforcement matters and also works closely with Poppleston Allen’s planning advisor, Jonathan Phillips ,to maximise opportunities for external trading areas, and to lift planning restrictions such as opening to allow for extended hours.
Clare is an experienced advocate regularly representing clients in licence and review hearings. Clare has a key role in the Institute of Licensing with her position as Secretary of the London Region. Clare speaks regularly at industry conferences and events and regularly hosts seminars for the firm’s clients. In addition, Clare regularly comments in the Trade and National Press.
