A recent Home Office consultation document, invites comments and responses to a suggestion that there should be top up training for door supervisors.

In essence, a review, conducted by the SIA, highlighted the need for additional training for door supervisors to increase their skill and knowledge. They identified four key areas namely physical skills, first aid, ejection and refusal of entry to 14-18 year olds and an awareness of the threat of terrorism.

The consultation proposes additional training on all new applications to be registered with the SIA, renewals of registration after May 2011 and for anyone who qualifies before June 2010. June 2010 is when the additional training would automatically be included in the existing training programme.

It is anticipated that top up training would take 1-2 days with possible ongoing training. The suggested options are as follows:

1. No change to the current requirements for door supervisors renewing their licences. However, new door supervisors would be subject to the new training requirements which would mean that new door supervisors would be better qualified than door supervisors registered prior to June 2010.

2. A requirement for existing licence holders to update their knowledge and skill with compulsory top up training. This would ensure that all existing licensed door supervisors would be trained to the same level as those applying for registration after June 2010.

3. Door supervisors would be required to take on the compulsory top up training as described in 2 above and in addition, take compulsory renewal training every 3 years before renewing their licence. This is the option preferred by the Government and the SIA.

Comments are required as soon as possible, as consultation ends on 23 March 2010.
